Happy New Year from the Storm worm and other Malware

Hello everyone,

The storm worm and other malware is out there trying to wish you a happy new year.  You’ve probably received the e-mails pointing to such sites as merrychristmasdude.com and uhaveapostcard.com or maybe happysanta2008.com.  These are all used by the storm worm, which is trying to create it’s own ‘botnet’ (think “Sky-Net” from the Terminator movies–only being used to steal identities and take down websites).

Also, in the past two days, there have been reports of malware that is using the blogspot system to spread.  You probably noticed that my blog is hosted at blogspot as well.  Thankfully, as far as I know, I’m not hosting anything dangerous.

What should you do?  In the case of the storm worm, don’t click the links.  If you have a router that will allow you to block by website, then add the above sites to your list.  Otherwise, add them to your e-mails block senders list.

In the case of the malware on blogspot, one recommendation that I have is to use Firefox with the add-on “No-Script”.  It blocks everything, including JavaScript, Flash, Shockwave, Silverlight, and others.  Use it at it’s most restrictive setting, and choose carefully if you want to allow something.  Only allow the entire site, if you’re positive you can trust it.  Otherwise, click the individual items that you want to see.

Happy New Year everyone. 🙂

Patrick.
